APPLICATION OF THE PVD PROCESS
PVD coatings (acronym for Physical Vapor Deposition) are very thin surface metal films of the order of a few microns (even nanometers), which are released with extremely innovative atomic deposition processes, in which the material is evaporated from a solid source or liquid in the form of atoms or molecules and transported in the form of vapor from a vacuum environment to the support where it condenses.
ACTIVITY IN PLASTLAB
As part of PLASTLAB’s activities, in parallel with the characterisation/qualification work on both plastic and metal materials and components, innovation activities are also cyclically carried out in collaboration with the main suppliers of diversified processes.
In particular, a screening phase was set up on the PVD process aimed at evaluating the aesthetic and physical-mechanical characteristics of the applied films, keeping the conventional chromium plating processes as an index of comparison. For more information visit our site about laboratory tests!
The possible use of the PVD process has been addressed not only to the automotive sector but also to other sectors such as household appliances, building-furniture, cosmetic packaging, etc.
In summary, the greater availability, compared to chromium plating, of aesthetic effects to fully satisfy stylistic needs was highlighted, and above all the need to develop suitable application cycles, both in function of the support (metallic and/or plastic) and to increase the characteristics performance.
